There are bands you listen to, and then there are bands that carve permanent landmarks into your formative years. For anyone who grew up orbiting alternative culture, post-hardcore, and the golden era of scene aesthetics, AFI wasn’t just on the playlist - they set the bar.
Last weekend, after years of listening, I finally crossed a massive milestone: I experienced AFI live for the very first time. Stepping into a completely sold-out room where every single person was locked into the same wavelength, the atmosphere was electric before the band even walked out.
The Nostalgia of the Swoop
When the lights dropped and AFI took the stage, they didn’t ease into it. They came out swinging with a barrage of nostalgic anthems that instantly transported the entire room straight back to the early-to-mid 2000s.
Standing in the crowd, it was impossible not to flash back to the era of Davey Havok’s iconic, gravity-defying hair swoop - an aesthetic achievement that an entire generation of scene kids tried (and failed) to replicate. Let’s be completely honest: I’m still jealous of that hair to this day. It’s an image synonymous with teenage rebellion, late-night lyric deciphering, and that feeling of finally finding music that matched the storm inside your head.
Davey Havok: Pure Theatrical Chaos (With a Foxy Twist)
Seeing Davey command a stage in person is an entirely different beast than watching music videos or live DVDs. The band sounded remarkably clean - tight, punchy, and dialed in to perfection - while Davey’s stage presence was gloriously, wildly all over the place. He was leaping, prowling, posing, and engaging every single inch of the stage with theatrical ferocity.
And here’s where my AuDHD brain took the wheel: looking at Davey’s current styling and over-the-top, flamboyant showmanship, I couldn’t help but think of Cincinnati’s own Eric Nally and Foxy Shazam. It’s that exact brand of fearless, unhinged, high-glam charisma where a front man completely abandons self-consciousness and gives the crowd 1000% pure performance. It was unpredictable, magnetic, and an absolute blast to watch.
A Room of One Voice
What made the night truly unforgettable wasn’t just the band’s precision - it was the crowd. In a packed, sold-out venue, there wasn't a passive soul in sight. From the opening chords to the final ringing feedback, the room was a unified chorus, shouting back every single word.
When you hear thousands of people sing lyrics that carried them through their darkest seasons, it ceases to be a concert and becomes a collective release. You could look around the floor and see people who had been carrying the weight of life all week just let it all fall away in the music.
The MSP Reflection: Why We Keep Coming Back
Leaving the venue with tired vocal cords and that familiar post-show buzz, I was reminded once again of why we do this. At My Sound Project, we talk constantly about the power of music to create safe spaces, unpack heavy baggage, and reconnect with our authentic selves without masks.
AFI proved that great music doesn’t age out; it matures with us. The songs that got us through high school and early adulthood still hold the exact same power to heal, release, and unite today.
It was an incredible first experience, an undeniable reminder of the power of live performance, and needless to say: I’m already counting down the days until the next one.
